Hello and welcome to DA's new mask-making Group. This is a re-boot of the old Mask-Making-Artisans community.
-To the original MMA members, I am in the process of sending out invites to all of you, but apparently I can only send out a set amount of invites at a time and then I have to wait on those invites to be accepted/denied before I can go on sending out more invites. So please be patient with me.
-Feel free to request to join in the mean-time if you haven't received an invite, yet. EVERY SINGLE member of the old MMA community is on a list to receive an invite, so please don't anybody feel slighted -I'm going in the same order as members are listed in the old comm. (just easier that way)
If you are 'not' an original member of the old MMA comm., please still feel free to Join -we would all LOVE new members, new mask submissions, and new topics to discuss.
If you are not familiar with our old community or are unsure of what we are about: Not only is this Group here to give DA's mask-artists a place to display their creations, but we are also here to share techniques/tutorials and resources, a place to ask questions and get answers, and possibly even ask for critiques on your work, and more.
My aim is for this Group to be an active and resourceful community of and for mask-artists, to network, be inspired, and receive/give help to one another.
-Doesn't matter what medium you use as long as it is something that can be either worn or used for decoration -so no computer rendered mask-art is allowed. It's got to be completely material outside of the computer. And no, printing out a mask on paper and tying it to your head does not count, lol!;D
-Also, your skill level doesn't matter. We all started somewhere!!
This is my first DA Group and I'm still feeling my way around. Please bear with me as I get this Group up and running. If you have experience in helping to create/set-up a Group and would like to throw-in your .02, please go for it -I'm all ears!!
If anyone would like to donate their time/skill to creating a mask-themed icon for our new Group, please let me know. It would be GREATLY appreciated and you will, of course, be given full credit for your work.
-Thank you!!
-In addition, I have gone through the Admin Area and I 'think' I have changed it to allow Join Requests, if you are not able to do so, please let me know and I'll see what else I can do.
And, I have created a number of Galleries based on the mediums a mask might be made of/from -if I have left out a material you think is important or if you think there should be a gallery for something specific, please let me know. When submitting please be sure to submit to the correct gallery or your submission will be denied.
Thanks so much!!!

Teaching mask-making classes...
I've recently had someone ask me to teach a class on how to make masks. I've never before taught a class on 'anything'...so I'm a bit lost right now.
On one hand I like the idea of teaching, sharing my knowledge and experience, and teaching others to possibly improve their own art or just being able be a part of someone expressing their individuality through art.
But, on the other hand...there is the fear of having someone copy my work or even possibly losing future sales due to teaching someone how to make the mask themself. As bad as that sounds... I think that as an artist, not to say all -but at least some, we have this innate need/des
Air-brushing resources?
Just this week I bought my first ever air-brush kit and a compressor. I'm very excited to start using this on my masks and other art-projects very soon.:)
I bought my air brush kit from the Powermate company which is a sub-company of Coleman. It's very basic, the air req's are 10-30 psi (whatever that means.. *chuckles*), but it looks like it will be a good beginner kit to start out with.
The compressor I bought is an oil-less airbrush compressor with a 30 psi max output. It is from the Altocraft company.
I'm hoping some of our members can offer some advice, tips, tricks, and technique suggestions for me and anyone else starting out with a
Paint choices and sculpting resources...?
First off, I want to thank everyone for continuing to submit your amazing mask-creations to the various galleries in the 6mos. that our Group has now been up and running.:) You've all been great and it is very much appreciated, and I'm sure not just by myself.:)
I've recently taken on a mask commission and find myself running into questions I haven't thought of in a while, so I come to you all:
Paint: What are your favorite kinds/brands of paint to use on your masks?
-So far I've really only used acrylics, my favorite brand being "Lumiere", but I also have a big collection of the more affordable "FolkArt" paints. I've been curious about
Neoprene Casting Rubber
Hi Neoprene users,
A message from Critical Coatings. The other suppliers have raised prices. Critical Coatings is not. Also, Critical Coatings in the only neoprene supplier who ships to other countries. They do a great job getting you neoprene safely during those difficult winter months.
To all Neoprene users:
Neoprene prices are going through the roof causing the sell price of your masks to skyrocket. Critical Coatings is the solution, we pledge not to raise the price of our products for the rest of 2011 and hopefully beyond. If you have been hesitant to switch from your old Supplier, now is the time. We offer a pint sample of product for y
